PD Tel Aviv Hosts a Roundtable on
"Empowerment for Minority Women" at American Corner Beersheva.
This first roundtable on "Empowerment for Minority Women,"
held on May 26, 2005 at the American Corner Beersheva (ACB), featured
Deputy Cultural Attaché Elizabeth K. Martin as a guest speaker
and facilitator. Ms. Martin spoke on the commitment of the US Government
to promoting the status of women around the world and Embassy Tel
Aviv's efforts in this area. The program brought together fifteen
representatives of NGOs from the south of Israel focused on women's
issues. The multicultural audience were excited to discuss women's
rights, economic empowerment, the importance of a social change
while maintaining culture and tradition, leadership, education,
combating domestic violence, and health issues. The program participants
stressed the importance of involving men and older generations of
women in the overall effort to advance the status of women in the
society in order to achieve long-term results. Edna Sabagh-Krivoy,
advisor to the mayor of Beersheva on the status of women, said that
"the roundtable shows how important it is to bring together
different NGOs working in the area of women's issues to understand
the joint problems, goals, and objectives, as well as to learn from
each other about the communities and increase the participation
of women in politics". Despite the wide variety of experience
and ethnic diversity, the program participants found much common
ground and decided to establish a tradition of monthly meetings
to expand networking and promote the issues of women's rights and
empowerment to take place at the ACB.
